What is Sedation Dentistry?

When going to the dentist causes undue anxiety, you may be a candidate for sedation dentistry. Dr. Hugh’s Dental PC can assess your health and suggest an appropriate sedation option for you.

Sedation dentistry is dentistry done while providing a form of medical relaxation for the patient. This relaxation is in the form of medication that is inhaled, swallowed, or taken through an IV.

Dr. Hugh will discuss the sedation options with you during the planning for your care. You will no longer have anxiety during dental care, because our sedation dentistry options will create a sense of peace, with no fear attached to your stay in our office.

Types of Sedation

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is a safe way to alleviate anxiety during dental treatment. This conscious sedation option is inhaled and provides a pleasurable feeling throughout the administration. Most people have no side effects after treatment and have little memory of the procedure.

Oral Sedation

Enteral Sedation is in the form of a pill or liquid taken orally to decrease anxiety. Sometimes it is used in conjunction with Nitrous Oxide.

IV Sedation

Intravenous (IV) sedation is the administration of a medication directly into the vein by an IV professional that comes into the office for us. IV sedation works faster than enteral sedation. This is usually used for more involved procedures as it provides a deeper level of sedation. You may be groggy, so make sure you have someone available to drive you to and from your procedure.
